Take-Two established a new unnamed studio under Private Division to continue development of Kerbal Space Program 2, with some of Star Theory’s employees brought into it, leaving it unclear what Star Theory’s role remains on the title. Development was shifted to Star Theory in part so that Squad could focus on developing further updates for the original game. The game was in development by Star Theory Games, formerly Uber Entertainment, which changed its name in order to display a stronger association with the Kerbal Space Program franchise. Uber was making Kerbal Space Program 2? And maybe I’m misreading, but it really sounds like Take Two did them dirty. Learned a few things unrelated to PA reading that. Considering how tense night missions tended to be, seeing the shadow of the Earth approaching a downed UFO faster than the vehicle you dispatched to handle it did create a unique sense of dread that really added to the game, at least for me. It wasn’t anything that couldn’t be done with a 2D map, but a 3D globe was much cooler from a thematic point of view.ĮDIT: also, the 3D view gave you a pretty nice intuitive view of the day/night cycle. My memory might be failing me, but I think that picking places for bases, finding detected UFOs, and dispatching vehicles to handle encounters was all done in the 3D globe mode. But, really, was there ever any actual gameplay on the globe? For all intents and purposes, wasn’t it just a menu gimmick? That’s certainly the case with the latest XCOM. I guess the coolness factor of the globe mostly mitigates the annoyance of being unable to see the other side of the world at any given time. On the positive side, I still like the music.Īh, X-Com is a good pick. I guess I’ve been spoiled by RTS games with different factions, but the fact that everyone has access to all the same units just bounces off me. I know some hardcore PA player will tell me that yes, the terrain stuff does X, Y, and Z, but I just don’t see it.

There aren’t any bottlenecks and I don’t think the elevation changes do anything other than provide a few seconds of impediment to ground forces. They’ve added more pronounced elevations and made the terrain look better, but it doesn’t really impact the actual fighting. The terrain features don’t mean much to the battles. Sometimes, it’s worse because there are more planets in the system, so you could actually be looking at a much smaller portion of the “map” area. It sounds cool to play on planets and moons, but like Tom pointed out it means that you’re at best seeing only 50% of the map. Titans has the same basic issues I had with the vanilla game.
